Paul Strand (1890-1976)
Strand was a “modernist” that wanted to convey realism with his photography. He did this primarily with use of light on a subject matter of people, places and things to convey that realism.

I enjoy Strand photos because at first they make you think, “what is this?”, but then you pause and really look, like a hidden focus point.

My theme would be to capture images that seem simple, but has a hidden focus to them.

Minor White (1908-1976)
Minor White wanted people to see past the picture to what else is there. His subject matter could seem insignificant at first, that of buildings and everyday things, but he would use light and shadows to bring out importance. White’s aim was also to
I enjoy the way White take normal everyday things and turns them into something special with his use of light. This is the type of photography that I want to shoot.
My theme would revolve around light and shadows, my homage would be an attempt to take shots that will connect emotion from the viewer with the image.

Both series sound good. You may even be able to take pieces of both to combine into one cohesive series. With Strand's work, I like how abstracted his final images seem. This is very easy to achieve by getting very close up, but is somewhat more challenging to pull off with more wide views, as he did. As for Minor White, take a look at his processes - he used a very specific method & materials to achieve the visual effects. Think more about the emotional connection, and how you can evoke that through your images. If you are going to show in B&W, shoot in color first, and use a black & white adjustment layer to convert the file. Pay attention to which originals are giving you the desired result (think color, lighting & exposure) and then re-shoot.

I think I would start with Paul Strand and see how things developed. (Yes, the pun was intended) Trying for an emotional connection to you images is always the goal. But I have found, hard to achieve.

Amazing photographer and I think the idea of taking straight forward shots that make people think is exactly what photography should e about. I love the idea of using shadows is a great thing to focus on. Often the lighting is what gives the subject a different feeling all together, shining a true light on your subject if you will. Love the idea can’t wait to see what you do.

I like your ideas on Strand. If i were you I would run with that. I think there is a lot of opportunity to take pictures of things that look either different or that are really hard to decipher what they are.
