At first I had trouble with this project; sometimes my ability to be too technical hampers my creative side. When I thought about finding a piece of writing to shoot a series on I kept bumping my head on the idea that the underlying thought was based on emotion. So, I decided to use that as my project, to try to break through and force myself into something that was challenging.
After loosing my father, and best friend, a year ago I have been dealing with many emotions. My goal with this shoot was to try to find some of those emotions in the everyday world around me. This brought about the idea that I did not necessarily want to base the photos on people, but I would not exclude emotion in people either. This shoot uses color as well as black and white to underline those emotions. This project was challenging and enlightening to me. I look forward to continuing this in the future.

A Start
The more i looked a Paul Strand's photos I liked what I saw, so I chose him. I also learned more about modernism, and liked how Strand embraced all types of photography, i.e. portraits, landscapes, etc.
Here are some of my attempts, i converted them to black and white using photoshop elements 7.0... yuck, i can't wait to get cs4 this week ;)

Paul Strand (1890-1976)
Strand was a “modernist” that wanted to convey realism with his photography. He did this primarily with use of light on a subject matter of people, places and things to convey that realism.
I enjoy Strand photos because at first they make you think, “what is this?”, but then you pause and really look, like a hidden focus point.
My theme would be to capture images that seem simple, but has a hidden focus to them.

Minor White (1908-1976)
Minor White wanted people to see past the picture to what else is there. His subject matter could seem insignificant at first, that of buildings and everyday things, but he would use light and shadows to bring out importance. White’s aim was also to
I enjoy the way White take normal everyday things and turns them into something special with his use of light. This is the type of photography that I want to shoot.
My theme would revolve around light and shadows, my homage would be an attempt to take shots that will connect emotion from the viewer with the image.

Color
Hopefully I can sell you that my pictures of flames are more of color than of light. I also I wish I had more time to play with the torch because these could probably be a lot better.
